I am Chieko Uozumi, representing a campaigning group of Japanese (single) mothers called “Mamademo”. Thank you very much for having me and two other members of
Mamademo here today. May I present Noe Kumagai and Mineko Shibata.
Mamademo was born out of my thoughts invoked by a lady in her eighties or nineties, who often sat in front of the MPs' office building in Tokyo to protest in
many causes. Her do-or-die attitude moved me so much that I decided to do what I could. In this spirit I created Mamademo in 2013.
Mamademo campaigns about many issues, such as nuclear energy, radiation exposure, wars and unfair
international trade deals. These issues are all connected.
Over the course of time, some prominent MPs in Japan have started to acknowledge our activities and have offered to cooperate with us. Our activities began to
be reported in the media, and mothers all over Japan have become aware that they can join protest marches with their children.
We women do not want the nuclear bomb, nuclear energy or war, because these things destroy lives nurtured
by mothers. We women have the patience necessary to give birth and raise children. We can use words and phrases filled with warmth and kindness. We are determined to convey important messages in
the same way as we talk to our children.
Women can cross the generations beyond history and connect with people all over the world across countries.Because women have
the patient to nurture it.
I think it was thanks to destiny that we met Mr Kenji Higuchi and started to work with him. He now has
our support after so many years spent working on his own to document and commemorate those who have suffered through wars, nuclear bombings, pursuit of economic prosperity, and the nuclear power
I feel that in Japan mothers are not treated with due respect.
Issues that single mothers face are often simply ignored.
The same goes for subcontracted nuclear power plant workers.
That's why I feel empathy for what Mr. Higuchi has been doing for about 50 years.
Children diagnosed with thyroid cancer afterthe Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster are ignored.
Housing support for voluntary evacuees from Fukushima will be ended this month.
Political circles, business circles, judiciary, scholars, the media, bureaucrats connected with
thegovernment and abandoned the
The Japanese government is trying toencourage Fukushima evacuees to return to areas where radiation
levels can be as high as 20 millisieverts per year. Voices of the victims are not listened to. Just like the victims of war or of uncontrolled economic growth.
We humans cannot coexist with nuclear technology.
We do not want to see the earth destroyed by the nuclear bomb or by the nuclear power industry.
I wish nuclear power plants would disappear from Japan and the rest of the world.
